In 1992 I saw Disney’s Aladdin. And since then I haven’t been able to put the pencil down.
That would make me about 5 when I decided I wanted to make cartoons, and now, 25 years later, I am 8 years into my career as a CG Character Animator. When I was a kid I thought I’d be animating using pencil and paper, but a Wacom tablet and Maya/3Ds Max are just as good. The truth is that from those early years the urge to animate has never left me. I would experiment with flip books, scanned drawings, Flash, and a Personal Learning Edition of Maya that overwhelmed me as a kid.
I followed an academic path of Art, Illustration, Film and Media studies, which led me to gain a first class degree in Animation Design from De Montfort University. I was soon snatched up by NSC Creative; a Leicester-based animation studio who specialise in large-format, fully immersive education shows. The chances are that if you have seen a digital-planetarium show, it’s one of theirs. Since that point, I have moved from strength to strength, now working the AAA games industry as a Character Animator.
During my career I have been involved in Narrative Design and screenwriting, comic production, and games design. Though I really enjoy each of these elements, my primary focus is to bring a story to life through effective performance based animation.
