These Wounds Bleed Still

Slavery doesn’t hide in the history books, these wounds bleed still.

This short film is an exploration of how the effects of the Colombian Slave Trade are still felt today. Produced for an event called Modern Slavery, God and Me, at HTL Church, Leicester in 2022, the film gives a brief background to one of the guest speakers talks.

The short film was produced through the month of September, 2022, with a 4 week turn around.

At the start of the process, I had been given a detailed overview of the issues to be raised in the film. Delicately, and with much input from the speaker who’s story this was, I began to boil the information down to it’s key elements, drafting a 3 minute script and a visual treatment, detailing how the visuals would enhance the script. I knew the film had to be 2D, and a little more abstract than I would typically go. I had to utilise the extent of my design skills and visual storytelling more than I had before. Due to the serious nature of the film’s subject, I tried to approach everything with care and sensitivity.

The visuals were painted by myself in Photoshop, and animated in After Effects using a number of different techniques with stock footage of ink bleeding to aid in transitions. The original audio was recorded and produced at HTL Church by talent much greater than myself with stock sound effects to add to the atmosphere of the piece.
